Introduction

Having been a member of the San Diego Zoological Society for several years, I’ve had many, many occasions to visit the zoo and its sister attraction, the Wild Animal Park (begrudgingly: Safari Park). If I had to harbor a guess, I’d say I go to one or the other about 10-12 times a year. So what is it that keeps me coming back?

Feeding the lorikeets at the Safari Park's Lorikeet Landing.

You simply never know what you are going to see, and every visit is unique. Animals that are typically inactive or reclusive may decide to bop around their enclosure in full view for all to enjoy. There may be a new birth—I’ve seen a gazelle on the Africa Tram that was less than an hour old. Perhaps you happened upon an exciting area you never knew existed. Maybe it’s just two words: Coke float.

The essence of this blog is to chronicle the joys, discoveries, tricks of the trade and the intermittent disappointments of the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park. I’d like to document what’s new, what’s upcoming, what’s fun (and what merits avoiding), what’s worth knowing and what you’ve been missing out on. Like the zoo, I want this blog to feature something unique with each visit.

Oh yeah, did I mention I’m going to be frequenting the zoo and park a lot more often to make this happen?

Thanks for visiting, and check back often.
